Start a doodling habit
A part from drawing and painting with watercolours I also doodle a bit. For me it’s a way of taking the pressure off and just having fun creating and practicing putting pen to paper. I usually do this in my diary or when I take notes at work, so it’s rarely something I show. But today I thought I’d share some!
I got this particular exercise from Maja Larsson. The idea is to draw a tiny box and fill it with a doodle of something you did that day. The suggestion is to do this everyday during summer holidays as a way to keep up your drawing habit, and also to help you remember your days in a fun way.
My weekend doodles
Doodle of my Friday having late night drinks with some friends at a local pub.
Here’s my Saturday spending time with my niece and nephews playing air hockey, with my sister in the other room vacuuming.
And here’s my Sunday hangout session with my girlfriends catching up on life and everything that’s going on right now.
It’s so easy!
As you can see it doesn’t have to be perfect. Not even close. It only has to somewhat resemble the thing you’re trying to illustrate. And if you think it doesn’t work, it’s so easy to just scratch it out and have another try. Because it’s only doodling!
And no need for fancy pens and papers, whatever you have at hand will work. However if you do want to buy something I highly recommend notebooks with dotted papers. They’re great for making straight lines and getting your doodles looking a bit more even. For pens I recommend anything you feel comfortable with. I use a Pilot V-ball 0,7 because I like the feel of it. It smudges quite a lot (as you can see from my doodles) but I don’t really care cause it feels so nice drawing and writing with it.
